Overview

Enjoy an enriching Cairo City Tour that encompasses a visit to the Egyptian Museum, Salah El Din Citadel, Mohamed Ali Mosque, and a journey through Old Cairo, a city with a history predating modern Cairo, boasting numerous historic churches and Roman sites.

Your excursion will commence with a convenient hotel pickup, and your Egyptologist guide will lead you through the following attractions:

1. The Egyptian Museum: Established in 1901 in downtown Cairo by Khedive Abbas Helmi II, the Egyptian Museum is a treasure trove of ancient Egyptian artifacts. The façade of the museum still bears the initials “A&H,” representing the historical legacy of Khedive Abbas Helmi II. With the contributions of eminent Egyptologists like Petri, Marriete, and Maspero, this museum has grown to become one of the largest in the world, housing a collection of over 120,000 pieces. It is situated near the renowned Tahrir Square, which played a significant role in the Egyptian Revolution in 2011. The museum’s exhibits are organized chronologically on the first floor, while the second floor boasts the remarkable collection of King Tutankhamen, including his jewelry, coffin, and his iconic mask.

2. The Citadel of Saladin & the Mosque of Mohamed Ali: The history of the Citadel goes back to the end of the Fatimid Caliphate. During this period, Saladin was dispatched to Egypt with the mission of ending the Fatimid Caliphate and restoring Egypt to the Sunni doctrine of Islam. After successfully accomplishing this, Saladin became the Caliph himself (1174 CE) and decided to construct the Citadel as a fortress to protect Cairo from potential Crusader attacks. The Citadel served as the government’s seat for an extended period. Later, Egyptian King Mohamed Ali (1831 CE), founder of Egypt’s last royal dynasty, chose to build a mosque and mausoleum for himself within the Citadel. This site is a testament to Egypt’s rich history.

3. Old Cairo: In Old Cairo, you’ll encounter a unique intersection of various religions, making it a fascinating destination to explore.

A delightful lunch will be served at one of the charming old Cairo restaurants. At the conclusion of the tour, you will be safely transferred back to your hotel.
